I’ll go ahead and say it: I really liked “Going the Distance.” Frankly, I’m surprised more early viewers didn’t, as the Drew Barrymore comedy is currently at a meager 49 percent freshness at the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator.

What else do we want in our romantic comedies, people? I’ll surely sound like a PR flack for saying this, but “Going the Distance” has something for everyone. It’s got the aw-shucks love story, realistically drawn central characters, some fabulously raunchy supporting players in Charlie Day (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Jason Sudeikis (“Saturday Night Live”), a plot that really does manage to avoid rom-com clichés, and it’s pretty darn funny.
I walked into the screening room with low expectations and walked out giggling. But clearly I’m in the minority. Without a big name co-star beside her, Barrymore’s films tend to open small, and “Going the Distance” will likely be no different, grossing in the $12 million-to-$15 million range. The movie deserves more love. Here’s what the critics are saying.
The Story
“The movie focuses on Erin (Drew Barrymore) and Garrett (Justin Long). She is a journalism grad student wrapping up a summer internship at a New York newspaper; he works for a record company based in the city. … Erin and Garrett meet over a vintage video game, get stoned, have sex and become a couple. But once her internship ends, she heads back to California and the two struggle to make a long-distance relationship work. Texting goes only so far; what about physical contact? Temptations are tossed in, in the form of flirty, understanding co-workers of the opposite sex.” — Randy Cordova, The Arizona Republic
The Stars
“Drew Barrymore and Justin Long make one cute couple. Whether or not the actors’ on-again-off-again real-life romance helped their performances as lovers frustrated by geography — he’s in Manhattan, she’s in San Francisco — it’s clear they have chemistry. E.T.’s girlfriend and the Mac Guy ooze a laid-back, goofy charm through their pore-less skin. They’re a modern-day Hepburn and Grant.” — Michael O’Sullivan, The Washington Post
The Direction
“Nanette Burstein, whose previous films have been well-regarded documentaries (‘American Teen,’ ‘The Kid Stays in the Picture’), doesn’t direct with the surest hand — at times, her camera performs distracting tricks unrelated to the material. But she knows how to let things happen between actors. Unlike the majority of wisecracking but dead-eyed rom-com couples, Barrymore and Long seem to take real joy in each other’s company. I’ll take that as an excuse to cling to the hope that romantic comedy, that poor, maligned, once-glorious filmic genre, may someday rise again.” — Dana Stevens, Slate
The Haters
“[T]his uneven movie is more a compilation of contemporary images and concerns peppered with derivative raucous scenarios, à la Judd Apatow movies, than an involving romantic comedy. There are the formulaic montages — lots of scenes of Barrymore and Long making out all over Manhattan — and predictable moments like getting high amid giggles and prattling on about their favorite movies. When Long goes to the tanning booth, it’s hard to keep from groaning, given how many rom-coms feel the need to insert a tanning casualty scene. Long, in goofy shower cap, gamely manages to make this sequence funnier than previous on-screen tanning debacles. In his first romantic lead, Long gets the most laughs, his pleasantly offhand and quick wit coming off in an almost improvisational style. He and Barrymore are both convincing as best friends who fall in love. They needed a better playing field.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today
The Final Word
“First-time writer Geoff LaTulippe could have written Erin as nothing but a male fantasy of the ‘cool’ girlfriend, but guided by his smart script, directed by Nanette Burstein and played by the timelessly appealing Barrymore, Erin turns into a real, vulnerable, relatable person. The same goes for Long as Garrett, and the rest of the movie for that matter — ‘Going the Distance’ is by no means perfect, but it’s light years beyond the average rom-com, bracingly honest and genuinely funny about the ups and downs of relationships. Barrymore and Long, once a real-life couple and now who-knows-what, have a real chemistry that complements their well-written, realistic characters, and even when the movie falls apart around them in the third act, we root for these two crazy kids and their shot at romance. They elevate the story beyond its more flawed moments, but really, ‘Going the Distance’ is pretty special all on its own.” — Katey Rich, Cinema Blend

‘I can’t sell them on to someone else, as that would be disrespectful,’ the singer said.By James Dinh

While producer Rodney Jerkins is expecting to begin work on an album of unreleased Michael Jackson music, Ne-Yo, on the other hand, isn’t sure what to do with the material he wrote for the late King of Pop before MJ’s death last year. The R&B singer/songwriter told Australia’s Daily Telegraph that he was sending Jackson three or four drafts a week prior to his unexpected death. More than a year later, Ne-Yo now still stands at a crossroads as he contemplates what to do with the songs he created specifically for the one and only MJ.
“I can’t sell them on to someone else, as that would be disrespectful, but I also think it might be disrespectful to bring them out myself. So I don’t know, I’ll sit on them and wait. It’s definitely quality music but they were songs written absolutely for Michael Jackson.”
According to the newspaper, Jackson hand-picked Ne-Yo as well as Black Eyed Peas producer Will.I.Am to work on his comeback album. It was only a matter of time before Ne-Yo was met face to face with his musical idol.
“I felt quite bad, as I’d allowed what the media had done to his name and image to have me thinking, ‘OK, what’s this about to be? Is this going to be weird?’ ” he recalled. “But he walked in a black suit and some sunglasses and was a genuine, nice guy. And it wasn’t because he wanted something from me, he just had no reason other than to be a decent guy.”
During their meeting, the duo talked about the current state of the music industry, something Ne-Yo says Jackson wasn’t too pleased with. “He believed what was wrong with a lot of music today is that people aren’t singing about anything. If it’s not about a party or sex then it’s about money, and there’s not really much to that.”
Ne-Yo, who has penned hits for Beyoncé and Rihanna as well as himself, explained that the entertainer wanted songs that were “melodic and meaningful.” “Michael told me the melodies needed to be the ones you heard once and could sing back, and the lyrics needed to have meaning and depth,” he said.
Unfortunately, Ne-Yo’s submissions weren’t recorded by Jackson, because the singer put his album on hold to rehearse for his This Is It concert series at London’s 02 Arena before passing away.
But Ne-Yo has hope that one day he’ll figure out what to do with the Jackson tracks. “Hopefully the songs will see the light of day, it just has to be the right way,” he said.
What do you think Ne-Yo should do with the songs he created for Michael Jackson? Should he keep them locked up or let someone else give them a try? Let us know what you think below!

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for ‘American Idol’ rock night.By Gil Kaufman

Adam Lambert performs “Whole Lotta Love” on “American Idol” on Tuesday

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That’s the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin’s 1970 Stonehenge of rock, “Whole Lotta Love.” And that’s before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”
That’s the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on “American Idol” rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” in 2004.

The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, “Love” was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called “You Need Love,” which was penned by Dixon.
For Zeppelin’s version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin’ Wolf, “Back Door Man” and “Shake For Me,” nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966’s “You Need Loving” from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin’s first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band’s only British single in 1997.
Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his “You Need Love,” and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune — which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show “Top of the Pops” in the 1970s and ’80s — has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train’s Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane’s Addiction.

Rapper and wife were pulled over after making an illegal U-turn on Sunset Boulevard on Wednesday night.By Gil Kaufman

Details are beginning to emerge about the Los Angeles traffic stop that resulted in rapper T.I.’s and wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle’s arrests on charges of felony possession of a controlled substance Wednesday night.
According to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Tip (born Clifford Harris Jr.), 29, was pulled over by police when he made an illegal U-turn in his Maybach on Sunset Boulevard around 10:30 p.m. Once officers approached the car on the traffic violation, they reported smelling the odor of marijuana from inside the vehicle, which prompted a search of the car and its passengers.

Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Nicole Nishida confirmed that police found a controlled substance in the vehicle described as an unspecified amount of pills that “resembled ecstasy.” Police are currently testing the pills and Nishida said she could not confirm where the pills were found. She also confirmed that there were other passengers in the car who were not charged with any crimes.
TMZ has posted pictures of the black-and-gray vehicle T.I. was reportedly driving at the time that show tall white Styrofoam cups in the front and back cup holders. The site speculated that the cups could also point to the presence of codeine syrup, a.k.a. sizzurp, a popular concoction made up of narcotic cough medicine and sometimes consumed in Styrofoam cups. Police have made no mention of codeine so far.
T.I. is on probation following a seven-month prison stint for a felony gun charge, itself a violation of his probation from a previous felony arrest. As part of his release in March, T.I.’s new probation conditions included supervised release for three years, DNA testing and drug counseling, as well as a ban on owning firearms and an agreement to submit to reasonable searches.
An assistant to T.I.’s attorney in the federal gun case told MTV News on Thursday morning (September 2) that a statement would be released later in the day on the matter, but that no details were available before that time on how, or if, the arrest could impact Tip’s probation in the previous case. A spokesperson for the probation office handling Tip’s case in Atlanta could not be reached for comment at press time.
T.I. and Tiny were released on $10,000 bail early Thursday morning and are due back in court on Friday (September 3).

‘What Up’ released via Twitter, three years after rapper’s untimely death.By Jayson Rodriguez

Bun B released a new posthumous Pimp C record featuring Drake via Twitter on Thursday night, after the UGK rapper amassed 50,000 followers on the social media network. The track, “What Up,” also features Bun B and was produced by Drake collaborator Boi-1da (“Best I Ever Had,” “Forever”). The song will be the first single from the late rapper’s final solo offering, The Naked Soul of Sweet Jones, due October 5.
“Now ’cause they empty, I’m just greedy for some more/ I need some more dough, I’m a p-i-m-p, for sure,” Pimp C raps.
Pimp C died three years ago, in December 2007, after an accidental drug overdose, according to the coroner’s report. Bun B has carried the UGK torch since his rhyme partner’s death and has collaborated with a host of artists, including Drake, who often pay homage to the Port Arthur duo’s legacy.
“What up Bun, my n—a, you know we stay down/ And I’m an honorary member of UGK town,” Drake raps during the song’s first verse.
“To be honest, I was Drake,” Bun B told Vibe magazine earlier this year about his buzz at the onset of his career.
Bun recently told MTV News he’s hoping to shoot a video for his own Drake collaboration, “Put It Down,” from his latest effort, Trill O.G.
“It’s very hard to live up to the hype the people create for things nowadays; luckily, this song did,” Bun said of the track. ” ‘Cause a lot of times, people build something up, and it’s almost impossible to match up to that. In this case, it matched up to it. And the fact that the other song, ‘It’s Been a Pleasure,’ is on it as well, you get two for two. It’s always a good thing when me and the young boy get together. It’s special music. That’s how I feel, and I think that’s how Drizzy feels.”
